About Enabling the How
Our call to action at 5th Place is to focus on developing emotional fitness and mental well-being in order to create positive change in the world. Join us, Chantal and Matthew, co-owners of 5th Place, in our escapades every week as we stumble and trip, dance and whirl our way through very normal and not so normal weeks in their drive to make the world a better place. This “How” comes in many different forms and in this case it comes in the form of sharing life, loves, and loss. It’s also a whole lot of what living is like in South Africa.

Show don’t tell
Storytelling, conversations with precious people, being at the launch of a film company together with the ability to listen and observe revealed the value of show don’t tell.
You don’t know until you take action
A challenging rescue of a vulnerable adult reminds us: life is to be lived, not just planned. True understanding comes through action and experience.
The faint scent of ourselves
Living in a quirky suburb with everything close at hand offers us opportunities to meet interesting people. A chase leaves an impression as soft as a scent.
Life is singing, are you listening?
A prizegiving, a farewell and several conversations about hearing the song that life is playing to you. Are you listening?
Multi-coloured confetti connection
Attending a storytelling session sparked engaging conversations with magnetic people at a conference we gatecrashed. The following days gave us the chance to build new friendships and stronger bonds.
The only place is in
We took a short break in the mountains at a place full of memories. It has been quite a while since the last visit which brought on reflections on how much has changed and how it can affect us.
Look inside
An unseasonal snowstorm and icy weather causes chaos. This is a time when it is vital to be able to kick out of the panic and into the planning.
Lean into not knowing
A sticky unflowing week full of loose ends and not knowing made us feel scratchy and uncomfortable. When we let go and leaned into it, not knowing ended up having quite surprising results.
Small changes, big impact
A big toe has to be corrected to impact the rest of the leg, hip and back. Small incremental changes will make a big difference, as they always do, if we accept that it starts with me.
