About Enabling the How

Our call to action at 5th Place is to focus on developing emotional fitness and mental well-being in order to create positive change in the world. Join us, Chantal and Matthew, co-owners of 5th Place, in our escapades every week as we stumble and trip, dance and whirl our way through very normal and not so normal weeks in their drive to make the world a better place. This “How” comes in many different forms and in this case it comes in the form of sharing life, loves, and loss. It’s also a whole lot of what living is like in South Africa.

Grown from cuttings

17 April 2025

A large garden requires focus, care and patience, something that not all of us have. Matthew does and he loves growing plants from cuttings too.

The power of practice

11 April 2025

The flow from one month to the next brings anxieties around balancing books and not bouncing cheques. Meditation practice helps bring calm but doesn’t always come easy even when it is important.

Of loss and saying “No”

3 April 2025

Another unexpected loss of a lovely human being brought on regrets of missed opportunities. There is also loss in saying “No” while honouring who you are and what you want.

Testing time

28 March 2025

A Slice of Silence

21 March 2025

We worked with two sets of students at very different stages of their lives yet both full of anxiety. We explored how to get the whirring to settle and the brain to calm down enough to open to learn.

Treasure the now

14 March 2025

A celebratory weekend of food, drink, music, and dance – coming together to witness, honour, and celebrate, with a touch of sadness reminding us to treasure the now.

Deadline squeeze

7 March 2025

Several deadlines loomed at us as the month rapidly drew to a close. Our race to meet them was successful even if we felt dragged through bushes backwards.

A fudgy week

27 February 2025

The week fudged along and felt bitty. We were tired and in need of rest which we gratefully took on the weekend. Self care is a commitment that is worth investing in.

It’s a celebration!

20 February 2025

A resistance and then an acquiescence led to a full and connecting celebration of a significant birthday. It’s in the now that real life is lived, noted Matthew.
