About Enabling the How
Our call to action at 5th Place is to focus on developing emotional fitness and mental well-being in order to create positive change in the world. Join us, Chantal and Matthew, co-owners of 5th Place, in our escapades every week as we stumble and trip, dance and whirl our way through very normal and not so normal weeks in their drive to make the world a better place. This “How” comes in many different forms and in this case it comes in the form of sharing life, loves, and loss. It’s also a whole lot of what living is like in South Africa.

Dealing with disappointment
Warmer weather brought a bit of hope but disappointment stamped out the excitement and anticipation of long awaited trips and great games. While being tested to accept what is, we focused on some insights and motivation for building emotional fitness in the youth.
What is a world without women?
A week where the bug baton was passed to Matthew, while the focus on women led us to ask the question: What needs to shift to make real change? A warm welcome for our retreat site visit and a splendid rugby performance rounded out a full and varied week.
A system upgrade, an important question and an invitation
Coughs and sneezes dotted a week of major upgrades, working on Mental Health Awareness Month, launching a first retreat and speaking about friends. And of course there is also sports news.
Faster horses and brighter candles
The week was full of opportunities to connect and communicate. There’s lots of the latter happening, as we market what we do into a world clamouring ever-more loudly for a different way. The highlight of the week was Matthew’s birthday weekend, a time of celebration with friends and family.
A long book, a lot of learning and a reacquaintance with a remarkable man
The Springboks won, a highlight in an uneventful week. Chantal spent most of her time reading Long Walk to Freedom in preparation for recording their latest podcast. Together Matthew and her were reminded of how remarkable Nelson Mandela was and just how aligned he had been to what they refer to as emotionally fit.
Challenges, champions and chats
Navigating a challenging week of power outages, cold weather, and a generally depressed mood with a sliver of light banter about sport, a dive into forgiveness and a reminder that there is always a solution.
Retreats, research, a rabbit and a recce
A trip to Parys, south of Johannesburg, to review the week and consider research needs leads to a recce for a retreat venue, the meeting and making of more friends, gold that is not metal and a pensive rabbit for the garden.
The connectedness of a common ailment
While working on a model of emotional fitness™, a book reveals that we are all connected by a common ailment. It also uncovers the patterns and the processes we follow that trip up the very best intentions to develop, learn and change. In the meantime, a birthday is celebrated and seeds are planted.
