What freaks you out

The only way to grow and heal and find out what life wishes to offer us, is to Accept and say “yes” to whatever comes our way.

Accept and say “yes”

AfrikaBurn is one of those events that elicits the most interesting views from those that have never been. It has an aura about it that either scares the living daylights out of you, makes your skin crawl or maybe peeks some curiosity as to what all the fuss is about. I used to be a combination of the first two. To me it was a gathering of hippies in a dry and dusty desert, with nothing better to do than drink, take drugs and moon about. The idea of toilets out in the open, no running water and bodies in various forms of outrageous costume or undress, completely freaked me out.

So when I was invited to take part, I was like, “No frigging ways!” The fact that the group was made up of marginally ordinary adults with children, bonds and family sedans gave me some pause. But when I looked again I saw crazy creatives on a hiding to nowhere. Tankwa Town, as the venue is called, is in the middle of the Karoo desert – it’s as “nowhere” as you are going to get! And on top of it, did I say that there is no running water? You have to take your own – all of it for the entire week including for washing. My memories of long drop toilets are in line with childhood nightmares I would rather not revisit.

How to get out of a situation you don’t want to be in

I was cajoled, needled and eventually convinced to give it a go. The prevailing theme for that decision and for the approach to what Afrikaburn had to offer me as an experience was “Accept and say yes.” I am so glad that I did. It was an eye-opener, and not the greatest experience in the end, mainly because as a newbie I was woefully under prepared for the dust. But it was enough to say yes to the event since then. Each time it has been better.

Dealing with difficult people and difficult situations

I used to be very conservative, and contracted. I let fear of the opinions of others rule my decisions. Now, when I accept and say “yes”, I am more open to the possibility that the experiences will do me immeasurably good. Even if they are bad.

How to open your heart, mind and life to change

If we want something different in our lives and an experience walks in the door that does not look quite like the way we expected it to, it calls us to make the choice to do something different. It calls us to accept and say “yes”.

Share the magic

This week’s quote is about accepting reality and change. It’s about being open to whatever shows up in our life. The quote is a reminder that when we are faced with a difficult situation or tough times to Accept and say “yes”. This offers us the opportunity to choose something different from what has come before or what has happened in the past.

Reducing the Certainty Deficit in high-performing people and teams · Emotional fitness coach

Matthew works with athletes, performance teams, and anyone who wants to reduce the Certainty Deficit in their situation or context.

The Certainty Deficit is the space between what you can do and what your body will let you do when it counts. It is context-specific and situational. A person or athlete can have zero deficit in one situation and a significant one in another.

The body holds beliefs that keep the Certainty Deficit in place. These beliefs run deeper than self-talk and faster than any conscious strategy. When they shift, the ceiling shifts, and new possibilities arise.

Matthew is also an emotional fitness coach who supports individuals to live and lead from a place of inner clarity and stability. The work is somatic-first, practical, and grounded.

If you're seeing a pattern that current approaches haven't shifted, let's talk.
